5 Misconceptions About Social Media Ads for Course Creators and Coaches with Shelby Fowler

Are you a coach or course creator who wants to use Facebook and Instagram to bring your online business to the next level?

Before you jump in and start spending money, we want to break down five common myths about running paid ads on Facebook and Instagram: it’s really not as difficult as it may seem.

Shelby Fowler, the founder of Fempire Media and Fempire Ads Academy, helps six figure course creators and coaches reach seven figures.

I had the honor of learning valuable information from our talk, and throughout our discussion we broke down common misconceptions about running ads, specifically when advertising a coaching or creativity driven business.

Before Shelby even began her company she used to work at performance advertising agencies for five years. She describes the one thing that people outside of her field misunderstood the most is that running ads will definitely work, you just need to throw some money in.

Now she is the CEO of Fempire Media and the founder of the Fempire Ads Academy. She empowers and educates other female business owners by teaching them how to scale their businesses and run their own successful ads.

Five common mistakes and misconceptions about ads, courses, and social media include:

1. Spending money on ads without first considering strategies

It’s important to be strategic with how you do it. Enough money will make it work, but there are ways to make that dollar stretch more!

2. Thinking you should only try ads if you have a large budget

Very often coaches and course creators come to Shelby and tell her that their ads are not working. She always asks them how much they’ve spent and they typically say around 20 USD. You really need to have a bigger budget to test ads well, but if you are not in that position to invest, that is totally fine. If you are new to the business, simply start with organic marketing and level up to paid marketing after you have made a significant amount and are able to re-invest.

3. Not considering other businesses

Yes, but first you must observe what works best for others! Learn from the best, and heavily observe your industry leaders. Of course don’t copy them, but analyze why they are so successful in running their campaign. Check their ad copy, their graphics, their sales pages, their funnel. Like Richard Brandson always said, “funnel hacking is key;” thus, if you are a newbie, observe, analyze, and learn.

4. Forgetting to set goals beforehand

Once your campaign is live, don’t just cross your fingers and hope for the best, you need to know your conversion goals by heart. You need to optimize daily and fix the issues if they’re not converting. It can be copywriting, it can be video or graphics, if you are not sure, test it out and optimize from it.

5. Waiting to contact an ads manager

A common misconception, but you shouldn’t be afraid to speak with an ad agency or an ad manager, even if you are not sure of your stage. If you are not sure if you are in the right position to invest, talk to a professional to understand what your budget can get you, and what the ROI is of the goal you would like to reach. They can quickly give you some quotes. If you do not yet have the budget to reach your goal, then you can at least prepare your business to be ready for that in the future.
