Learning How to Serve Your Community Publicly and Secretly with Kat Brendel

Today we are so glad to introduce Kat Brendel to our show. Kat grew up and lived in multiple different countries. She was once a journalist and then turned to Head of Marketing at a startup in Berlin, and eventually co-founded a Womxn only co-working space in Berlin. She was frustrated with what she had seen at work, so she started her podcast Leading Rebel and now she even has a secret podcast show that you cannot find online to listen to. Want to know more?

Here are the interview questions we talk about:

  • What brought you into the podcast world?

  • Why did you choose to have a secret / non-public podcast group? Any strategies behind this?

  • What has changed about the podcast industry because of the pandemic?

  • What are the main struggles for Womxn podcasters in your community?

  • What do you believe is the best strategy to promote your new podcast? (We know about inviting people on your show or promoting on your social media, but what else do you do?)

Kat Brendel’s Background and Story

Kat is a coffee addict, storyteller, and podcast strategist. She works to help people find their own voice and story. It happened naturally after studying journalism and working in the Marketing department incorporate, and eventually, she started to work at a tech startup in Berlin, before she realized that in the tech world, there are just never enough female leadership roles. She considered blogging or filming videos, but decided to use her journalism skills and create her first podcast Leading Rebel.

Leading Rebel is public, but the second podcast is just for her community. However, if you are a newbie, Kat recommends starting with a public one to increase visibility.

    Podcasting industry after the pandemic

Some people actually had less time during the pandemic because of kids at home and having to work out of their office.

    What makes a successful podcast?

Like all the other content, consistency is the king, if you want to use podcasts as the main content platform, you should definitely publish once or twice a month.

Important tips, record ahead of the time, you can for sure take a seasonal break but that does not mean you disappear.

    Main struggles for Womxn podcasters

Fear of showing up online, worry about judgment really affected a lot of people who would like to start a podcast.

The best strategy to promote your new podcast? (except for inviting guests promoting on their social media, what else could you do? )

Most importantly is to understand your listenership and you should talk to the potential listeners as much as you can. When you are about to launch, you can plan some events such as small giveaways, to have guests on your podcast so that she/he can promote to his/her community and also join other people's podcasts as guest speakers so that you can present yourself to others community.
