Building a global community help you to achieve a successful career with Mia Chang

IIn today’s episode, we had Mia Chang come to our show.

She is an amazing community leader in the Data Science world and is currently living and working in Berlin.

We all know networking is an important skill, but building a community can take you further.

Today we will learn from Mia about how she used her community-building skills to help her find a Data Scientist job in Berlin working for the well-known company Amazon.

A career path as a data scientist

Mia studied computer science and began her career as a Backend engineer then worked her way down a number of STEM paths: data consultant, data scientist, and now a solution architect at Amazon. All those different roles gave her a great understanding of different perspectives of the coding world.

Active in the Data Science community.

Mia has organized several meetups in Taiwan and Germany. When it comes to community building, sometimes different cultures do make a difference.

Organizing local events in Berlin and Taipei

Meeting people from different backgrounds is really interesting, the communities in Taiwan and Berlin are very different. 

  • You use Facebook to keep in touch with other attendees. In Europe, LinkedIn is used more often for the same purpose.

  • In Berlin, there is more diversity, as well as different perspectives in the Data Science World.

To sum up, Mia agreed that her work on community building and personal branding such as co-writing a book really helped her achieve and brought her more opportunities careerwise. She was even invited to go on Deutsche Welle, a worldwide German Radio show.

AI MVP Book

She also co-wrote the AI MVP Book, which is a practical guide to Microsoft AI written by 17 authors from around the world.

  • Understand certain expectations need to be met 

  • Make your participants comfortable
