How to Become an Influential Leader and Get Real Results with Catherine Cantey

Today we have Catherine Cantey on our show. Catherine is a leadership coach who helps busy professionals obtain measurable results with their clients.

Many people believe that being a leader is only important if you hold a leadership position, but in actuality, leadership skills are incredibly important because they bring rich value to the table, and really impact the people around you. Whether you're a team of one or one hundred it is important to be driven in order to run and support a prosperous business.

Today we have an expert in this industry to teach us more. Catherine describes how she first started her business while she was still working in Corporate America, and how she has since left and become a full-time leadership coach. She has spent the past twenty years in the banking and financial industry and has traveled around the United States helping people grow their businesses. We also chat about how her business has been impacted by COVID-19, and why LinkedIn is the place to be and a great tool to utilize if you want to expand your network.

Jumping From Corporate America to the Coaching World

Catherine could feel that she needed more. She needed a career that would stimulate her growth, and she knew there was a field out there for her where she could balance her prior knowledge and experience with a career that truly helped people.

Originally a side hustle, she decided to work with a coach who helped her with her creativity and transition into this new experience. Everything that she teaches people she got to apply firsthand, so she's certainly qualified. For her, leadership coaching was simply a natural fit.

The Best Way To Define Success With Clients

In this episode, we also learn that the true way to measure success with leadership is by speaking with the people around the leader. Did the leader get better at communicating, delegating, creating clarity, etc? Catherine works as a coach and guide to make this possible.

She typically tries to create a three-step plan for clients so that the process is clear and tangible, and when they succeed in those three steps then she will create a following three, and so on.

Utilizing LinkedIn as a Tool For Success

Catherine has used LinkedIn to get where she is today and has become an expert. She shares three tips with us:

    • Solve your client's struggle in your job description. Don't write: "Vice President of Business Development." Instead something along the lines of "I effectively help you gain recognition for your leadership skills," is much better because it genuinely means something.

    • Turn off the "People Also Viewed," setting that appears on the right side of your screen. There's no reason to direct people to your competition when they're taking the time to focus on you.

    • Write for the job that you want, not the job that you had. Under your job experience section, change the language to show what you're capable of doing for people in the positions you desire, rather than catering to your prior work experiences.

How Business Has Changed in a COVID-19 World

Success is also very much possible in these COVID and post-COVID times. Through Catherine's sales curriculum and online courses, it is just as easy to grow your business from home. This course was created after COVID began because more people were looking for condensed online programs during this time, so packaging it together and gaining traction for the pilot program came naturally.

She breaks down her online program into easy to consume modules:

    • Communicate more effectively with people so that it's easier for them to work with you.

    • Create influence and drive change in an environment with many decision-makers.

    • Use LinkedIn as a tool for networking, growth, and success.

Catherine outlines how we can use this unconventional period of time to restructure what we know and redefine our businesses in a way that provides a better and healthier working environment for everyone, even if it's via Zoom.

The program is available on her website still. Check it out!
